Workplace Injuries FAQ
The average American spends the majority of their days at work. As you can imagine, that means a lot of accidents and injuries occur in the workplace.
Below, we’ll answer some of the most common questions about workplace accidents and injuries.
I Was Injured at Work, What Should I Do?
If you got hurt at work, then you need to inform your employer or a supervisor right away. This serves a few purposes:
- Your employer will file an incident report verifying the accident
- An on-duty employee can secure the accident area to ensure it’s safe for others
- Your employer may tell you where to go seek medical care
If your situation is an emergency, then you’re not obligated to wait around to inform someone. Simply go to the emergency room right away. You do need to tell your employer about the accident in a timely manner, though. Otherwise, any future claims for compensation could get denied.
How Will I Get Compensated for My Injuries?
You visited the doctor, but you were the one who got stuck with the bill. What’s next? Who is liable for the medical expenses you suffered, and how will you get reimbursed from the time you miss from work?
Upon notifying your employer, they are obligated to report the incident to their worker’s compensation insurance company. They’ll also provide you with the paperwork you need to file your claim. Fill out this paperwork and return it to your employer. They will give this information to their insurance provider.
The insurance company will start an investigation into the situation right away. You’ll be notified about the status of your claim by mail. If your worker’s compensation claim is approved, then you’ll start getting benefits through the mail immediately.
What if my Claim Gets Denied?
In some circumstances, injured workers may get served with denial letters when they apply for worker’s compensation. If you’re facing this scenario, then don’t lose hope. Reach out to an attorney who can go over your claim.
In most cases, you can correct the issue with your original claim and appeal your denial. An attorney can help you identify what went wrong and how to solve the issue.
